As the number of parents deciding not vaccinate their children continue to grow, more and more doctors are deciding to turn those children away.

There’s good reason for that.

Diseases that were largely eradicated in the United States a generation ago are returning and children across the globe are getting sick and dying from preventable diseases–in part, because parents are choosing to skip their shots.

It’s true. Ten percent of parents are now refusing vaccines for their kids. On the flip side, nearly one in eight pediatricians reported they always dismiss these patients. Their practices have been emboldened by families who say they will choose only those physicians who require other families to vaccinate.

Who can blame them?

I recently spoke to Dr. Gulshan Harjee, who benefited from UNICEF’s immunizations efforts as a child growing up in Tanzania. All these years later, she still believes in immunizations.
