Q: My wife and I have enjoyed Cavendish & Harvey candy drops, which we bought at Your DeKalb Farmers Market. The drops are no longer carried there. I have found the candy online but an order requires 10 or more tins, and a delivery fee. Are there any Atlanta locations that sell these wonderful candies? Ingo Hentschel, Atlanta
A: These German travel sweets come in colorful tins that hold a generous 7 ounces of hard candy in a variety of fruit flavors. You’ll find the pretty tins at the Town Brookhaven shopping center. Check out Marshall’s, 150 Brookhaven Ave., Brookhaven 404-848-9447. You’ll find assorted flavors of Cavendish & Harvey candies across from register one, and they’re priced at $2.99 each, which is quite a better deal that what you found online. Note that stores like Marshall’s don’t stock the same items for very long, so you might want to get a few extra tins.
Q: Where can I get a portable ice maker that can be placed on the counter? I saw one online by Avanti that I liked, but it was more than $200 and I had to have it shipped. Is there a less expensive model that I can buy in a store in the Atlanta area? Thanks for your help. Joe Strickland, McDonough
A: Joe, I think I found the same Avanti portable counter top ice maker you were looking at, but for less money, and at a store nearby. Avanti IM12C-IS can make up to 26 pounds of ice daily, and you can select small and large cubes. It weighs 22 pounds and measures just over 15 inches high and about 10 inches wide. I found it at BrandsMart USA, 4000 Mount Zion Pkwy., Stockbridge, 770-389-6100. It’s priced at $139.88, and if you take advantage of the manufacturer’s rebate, you can get an additional $10 off.
Q: A co-worker of mine, who recently relocated to Atlanta from Philadelphia, is quite distressed that she cannot find Old Bay crab cake mix. Any suggestions or leads you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Deon Baker, email
A: You’ll find packages of Old Bay crab cake mix for $2.99 each at Publix, 595 Piedmont Ave., Atlanta, 404-881-1750. They’re located on a rack between the seafood section and the deli.
Q: I have a recipe that calls for Jade Pearl Rice, but I can’t find this type of rice in my supermarket. I’m not familiar with it at all, but would love to try this recipe. Can you find it for me? And if you could find an organic version locally, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you. Carole Buchanan, Alpharetta
A: Jade Pearl Rice is a delicately flavored short-grain rice that gets its pale green tint from bamboo extract. I found the rice in the bulk foods section of Whole Foods, 2800 Old Milton Pkwy., 678-534-3138. The organic rice, which is non-GMO verified, is grown in the USA and sells for $4.69 per pound.
