What is it?

Orange lipstick. Yes, that's right, hot shades of sunshine for your mouth.

Why do I need it?

Because it's not your momma's orange. And if your lips have been saddled with the same color for the past five years, then they need some excitement that only orange lipstick can provide.

"If you put orange lipstick into the everything old is new again category, the one thing that has to be the standout change is texture," says Karen Gerson Duncan, a television make-up professional.

"When last we saw orange lipstick on our mothers, it was just lipstick. Now, we get gloss and shine and creamy pencil options that give us tone differences; allowing more and more women to try and buy successfully," she says.

Gerson is right. Options abound.

While M.A.C Cremesheen Obi Orange offers your lips plenty of lush color, it comes as a fairly sheer true orange lipstick delivered with a traditional applicator. Nothing wrong with that because it's a pretty perfect lipstick, and an excellent choice for your initial foray into orange.

Italian-made By Terry Mango Tango provides a slightly more subdued tint, and bills its slim lipstick balm as a pure concentrate of hyaluronic acid formulated to moisturize, fill in wrinkles and fine lines while boosting volume. Mango Tango serves up orange with a sly suggestion of coral.

Juicy Shaker, the uber sexy new offering from Lancome, lets you play in the orange spectrum without a lot of commitment by offering a pigment-infused lip oil that is essentially, a flavored gloss that you can build for deeper tone. Note that Juicy Shaker isn't one of those icky sticky glosses. It glides on smoothly with the stubby cone-shaped spongy applicator. Oh, and the crazy cool martini shaker (or is it a mini lava lamp?) tube is a huge draw.

Now that you're ready to venture into the world of gorgeous orange lips, one question remains: should you match your blush? Duncan offers her take -- and the final word -- on the subject.

" Are you serious? If someone turns orange, they have overdone their carrot intake. Look at barely there peachy tones if you want to give it a go," she says.
