For the third time in the past four years, the Fourth of July AJC Peachtree Road Race will play host to the USA Men’s 10k Championship.
Abdi Abdirahman of Tucson, Ariz., and the reigning U.S. Men’s 10k champion, clinched the title for the third year in a row at the 2009 Peachtree. The men's 10k is part of the USA Running Circuit (USARC) which is a USA Track and Field road series featuring championship races from one mile to the marathon.
“The USA Running Circuit does an incredible job showcasing and promoting U.S. running talent, and it’s great to have the opportunity to host America’s best male distance runners," Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Tracey Russell said.
The USA Men’s 10k Championship features a $30,000 prize purse -- $10,000 to winner -- bringing the Peachtree's total purse to $111,300. In addition, the first 10 U.S. runners earn points at each USARC event with a final grand prix prize purse of $12,500 for the top three overall male and female point scorers.
“Taking our national championships to some of the country’s best road races is important for growing the sport and raising its visibility,” USATF CEO Doug Logan said.
Online registration for the 41st AJC Peachtree Road Race, the nation's largest running event with nearly 50,000 finishers, opens to the public on Sunday, March 21 at 1 p.m.
