The 2-year-old, Luna, became sick on Monday with severe liver damage and was euthanized.
The gum contained Xylitol, which is considered poisonous for dogs, depending on how much is consumed.
The natural, sugar-free sweetener is used in chewing gums, breath fresheners, pudding and gelatin snacks, oral rinses, toothpastes and vitamin supplements.
Xylitol is safe for humans but can trigger liver failure in dog, according to PetPoisonHelpline.com.
