A 72-year-old Louisiana man whose house suffered damage during the August flooding saw his fortunes turn for the better in October.

James Lapeze won the $1 million Powerball jackpot on Oct. 1 by matching all five white-ball numbers, according to the Louisiana Lottery Corporation.

“I checked my numbers over and over again,” Lapeze told Louisiana Lottery officials when he realized that his ticket was a big winner. “I even had my wife check them because I really couldn’t believe that I won!”

Lapeze will take home $700,000 after taxes. He said he plans on paying off his home and enjoying his retirement.
