The concept of chicken sweaters might ruffle a few feathers, but a group of retirees in Massachusetts believe their unusual knitting project is worth clucking about.

For chickens in the New England area, winters can be long and brutal. While some chicken breeds shed their feathers and grow new ones during the winter season, others chickens may be imported from warmer climates, according to The Associated Press

The chickens, which are located at an estate near the retirement home, have adapted to wearing the tiny sweaters, and it's not just making a fashion statement. Estate spokesperson Erica Max told The Associated Press that egg production has increased noticeably since the chickens started wearing the sweaters.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
