Photos: Renovated bungalow brings couple together in Kirkwood

This Kirkwood home shows its age in all the right ways.

This Kirkwood bungalow began life as a two-bedroom, one-bath home in 1935, but a careful renovation and addition in 2017 transformed it into a 1,650-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bath home.

Many elements in the dining room, which is on the front part of the original house, were preserved in the 2017 renovation and addition project. The homeowners worked with Stryant Construction to keep the built-in cabinets and shelves that they liked, and accessorized the room with a West Elm chandelier and wall sconces from Neiman Marcus.

"We love that this house is a renovation/addition, and in keeping with the character of the neighborhood," said Isom. The fireplace in the dining room was recovered in the renovation and returned to its former glory.

The home's rustic modern interiors are a blend of both homeowners' styles, featuring hints of brass throughout.

A Tucker two-drawer media cabinet from Four Hands provides modern storage and crisp, contemporary style in the living room.

Homeowners Megan Isom and Taqqee Id-Deen worked closely with builder Stryant Construction during the renovation, including customizing their home with upgrades like the master bathroom countertop from Floor and Decor.

Hexagonal Carrara marble (by Allen+Roth) on the shower floor accents the Villa Artisan Mist porcelain tile on the wall and Dimarmi Bianco porcelain tile on the master bathroom floor. The homeowners found the tiles at Lowe's and at Floor and Decor.

An upholstered tufted bed from Sunpan anchors the master bedroom, which features a light, gray-and-white palette with mirrored nightstands for a touch of pizzazz.

Isom and Id-Deen use the front bedroom as an office space. With cool gray tones and dark hardwood floors as the room's foundation, a modern desk from West Elm mixes effortlessly with classic Craftsman windows looking into the fenced-in front garden.

A bright green chair with a botanical-print pillow deftly accentuates the transition on the screened porch from the home's interior living space to the deck outside.

With the living room and screened porch addition, Taqqee Id-Deen's and Megan Isom's renovated 1935 Kirkwood bungalow provides the modern open floorplan for entertaining. The graphic rug brings an artistic element to the floors, too.

A pair of mid-century-style leather chairs, from West Elm and found in the living room addition, are among the homeowners' favorite pieces.

Megan Isom enjoyed picking everything from the furnishings and lighting down to the grout colors in the bungalow she bought and renovated with her boyfriend Taqqee Id-Deen. "I do love trying to put a room together where it feels comfortable and cozy," she said. She relied on the expertise from Ryan Austin Design for furniture choices and even table decor.

While Megan Isom's and Taqqee Id-Deen's 1935 bungalow was transformed during renovations from a two-bedroom, one-bath to a three-bedroom, three-bath home the front of the house is structurally the same. The foyer mirror reflects the irreplaceable charm of the original front door.

The guest room is one of three bedrooms in the 1,650-square-foot Kirkwood bungalow renovated by Stryant Construction. A large center island topped with Calacatta Quartz countertops is a centerpiece the huge modern kitchen. Brass hardware, gray barstools and gray quartz topping the perimeter counters provide hints of warmth in the white space.

Pendant lighting from West Elm hangs above the modern kitchen island, which is topped with light-gray-veined Calacatta Quartz.

The couple opted to lose a few wall cupboards in the kitchen in order to make space for their weathered wood accent wall. Made by Stikwood, the wooden planks may be peel-and-stick, but they look as if they could have been part of the home's original construction. The black light fixture was purchased on Amazon.com.

Lewis Dolin brushed brass hardware, from The Hardware Hut, adds a glamorous splash of color to the white cupboards.

Authentic glass doorknobs reflect the homeowners' desire to save as much of the bungalow's charm as possible during the 2017 renovation. "I tried to keep as many doors that were on the inside as we could," said Isom.

Furniture from Pier 1 Imports, accented with colorful throw pillows, is the foundation for a comfortable entertainment spot on the screened porch addition.

French doors connect the back porch with the interior living spaces, creating seamless transition from indoors to out.

The back deck, which overlooks a spacious intown backyard, was added to the 1,650-square-foot bungalow. All-weather furniture and a colorful outdoor rug extend the living space for Megan Isom and Taqqee Id-Deen.

The homeowners will open the doors to their recently renovated bungalow as part of the 2017 Kirkwood Spring Fling Tour of Homes May 20-21.

Megan Isom and Taqqee Id-Deen began searching for a home in Kirkwood in 2016 to blend their two households and still be near family and friends. Id-Deen works for Wells Fargo Securities, and Isom works for H&W Printing.
