A New York girl who suffered severe burns in a raging house fire that killed her father and three siblings got a big surprise Monday when she learned her family would be traveling to Orlando, Florida, for a trip to Disney World in February.
Safyre Terry captured the hearts of people across the globe when she asked for Christmas cards for the holidays. According to her aunt, Liz Dolder, Safyre has since received hundreds of thousands of cards.
In 2013, Safyre was the sole survivor of an unsolved arson which left her with burns over 75 percent of her body.
On Monday, she learned her family would travel to Florida for a trip sponsored by the non-profit foundation Baking Memories 4 Kids. She was nominated for the trip by her classmate, Zachary Cunniff, who went on a trip sponsored by the organization after his father, New York State Trooper David Cunniff, died during a traffic stop in 2013, according to WNYT.
Dolder, who has custody of Safyre, learned her family would be taking the trip in March after Safyre had her foot amputated.
"She broke down three different times that day and I was feeling super homesick myself," she wrote in a post to a Facebook page in support of Safyre. "As I was settling to go to sleep my husband called with this amazing news. He says 'We are going to Disney.' Baking Memories 4 [Kids] called him and said 'We want to send you to Disney.' I thought he was kidding."
On Monday, Zachary and tens of others gathered in Albany, New York, to surprise Safyre.
"Safyre, do you know why we're here today?" Baking Memories 4 Kids founder Frank Squeo asked in a video of the surprise posted to Facebook by Dolder. Safyre didn't respond, instead running toward her friend Zachary and giving him a hug.
"Saf, you're going to Disney World!" Zachary exclaimed.
