Since 1982, the International Day of Peace (or World Peace Day) has been a celebrated by nations around the globe. The event, created through a United Nations international declaration, now occurs annually on Sept. 21. It is a day dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace between nations and people.

Of course, it’s hard to foster peace with others if your own spirit is in turmoil. September also happens to be National Yoga Month, so here are a few ways you can take some time to build a bit of inner peace as well.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, Exhale Midtown invites guests to participate in its 5th annual NamasDAY event. The event features free evening yoga classes, live music and mini spa therapies. The classes are open to individuals of all fitness and flexibility levels.

Attendees will experience the range of yoga classes offered at Exhale including Exhale Power, designed to build strength and endurance while toning and tightening your core; Exhale Flow, a blend of the traditional vinyasa methodology with contemporary dynamic flow and Exhale Chill, which uses sequenced restorative and yin yoga postures to help you feel more balanced and calm.

The classes are free but you do need to sign up. Go to info.exhalespa.com/namasday, choose the Midtown location and look for the Namasday class at 7 p.m.

If you have time for a day trip, visit ISHA Institute of Inner Sciences for the 3rd Annual World Peace Day event on Saturday, Sept. 26. The day long festival includes free yoga and meditation classes, performances, live music, vegetarian lunch and family oriented fun.

The ISHA institute is located about two hours from the Atlanta area on 1,400 acres of land in McMinnville, Tenn. (near Chattanooga). Past speakers have included Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post and Elizabeth Lindsey, a filmmaker/anthropologist.

This year’s featured guest is Sadhguru J. Vasudev, yogi, humanitarian and founder of ISHA who will talk about the vital elements needed to cultivate inner and outer peace. There will be performances by opera singer and Tifton native, Travis Pratt, who appeared on “America’s Got Talent” and circus performer and Atlanta native, Claire De Luxe who specializes in LED and fire performances and stilt dancing.

The event begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at 6 p.m. Admission for the World Peace Day celebration is $20 per person, but bring a copy of this article and register at the gate to get free admission for one person.

For a full schedule and additional information, visit worldpeaceday.org or call 931-668-1900.

As Sadhguru says, “Without being capable of bringing peace into your own being, there is no way you are going to be capable of bringing peace to the world.”
