When you're trying to watch your waistline with a lower-calorie beer, local ones from Atlanta brewers present a problem. Even though it's a given that not many of them are designed for weight loss, many also don't list calorie counts on the bottle.
But there is a solution to staying slender while selecting local brews. Go for the ones that have the lowest alcohol by volume or ABV, ideally 5 percent or less, because most of the calories in beer come from the alcohol.
Here are four to give you a head start in the quickly growing category of lower-alcohol Atlanta brewery beers:
Prince of Pilsen from Decatur's Three Taverns Brewery
ABV: 5 percent
Billed as a "hoppy Pilsner," this Euro-style brew iss dry hopped and has a distinct citrus aroma and bite. It comes in draft or six pack.
Sour Asylum #1 from Three Taverns Brewery
ABV: 3.8 percent
Sour Asylum #1 is the leader in a 10-part series of Sour Asylums, many of them with 5 percent ABV or less. This one is light and effervescent, brewed with 100 percent Pilsner malt, soured with lactobacillus in the kettle, and dry hopped with Amarillo and Galaxy.
Red Brick Brewing's Casual Session IPA
ABV: 4.5 percent
This is an easy drinking IPA with a hoppy punch but without the typical bitterness. It pairs well with fajitas or arugula salad, according to the makers.
Monday Night Brewing Nerd Alert
ABV: 5 percent
Billed as a "pseudo pilsner," Nerd Alert is technically an ale and known for its incredibly clean flavor. It goes well with fish.
