Employees in law enforcement have the highest rates of obesity among professions, according to a Wall Street Journal story. The story is based on data from the American Journal of Preventive Medicine .
Right up there with law enforcement are security guards and firefighters. In all, 40.7 percent of employees in those groups are seriously overweight.
Next highest obesity rates are:
- Social workers, clergy and counselors (35.6 percent)
- Home health aides and massage therapists (34.8 percent)
- Architects, engineers (34.1 percent)
The average obesity rate among U.S. workers is 27.7 percent.
Who fares better than average? These professions have the lowest rates of obesity, according to the 2010 data:
- Janitors, maids and landscapers (23.5 percent)
- Cooks, bartenders and food servers (23.1 percent)
- Physicians, dentists, EMTs, nurses (22 percent)
- Artists, actors, athletes and reporters (20.1 percent)
- Economists, scientists and psychologists (14.2 percent)
