Flashback photos: I-20 through the years, 1960-1997

Atlanta has two major north-south interstate arteries that travel through the city, but only one east-west interstate highway.

Nov. 1962 - Atlanta, Ga - Atlanta's skyline seems to offer a huge roadblock to highway construction in the foreground...From Boulevard, looking west, East Expressway (I-20) road construction aims for the heart of the city, but turns right in the distance.

Sept. 18,1964 - Five p.m. traffic moves smoothly over the downtown Expressway Connector which was opened Friday. (Traffic in foreground appears to be heading east to I-20)

April, 1960 - Atlanta, GA - Aerial views of East Expressway (I-20) construction - Section between Stone Mountain Road and Pole Bridge Creek has outbound lanes paved, others are not. There's paving down from Candler Road to the intersection with U.S. 278 outside Lithonia.

1964 - Atlanta, Ga.: Expressway bottleneck unplugged: Ramp connecting the northbound lanes of the South Expressway to the eastbound lanes of the East Expressway (I-20) open to traffic Friday, removing a bottleneck of having to cross Capitol Avenue via Clark Street SE.

Aug. 10, 1960 - Atlanta, Ga. - Taken at the corner of Fraser St. and Woodward Ave. looking toward the northwest. This is where the expressway cloverleaf will start (I-20 and downtown connector).
