Flashback photos: Atlanta in the 1960s, buildings and skylines

Atlanta’s skyline was undergoing a transformation in the ’60s, with many buildings going up (the Equitable Building, the Hyatt Regency) and some coming down to make way for the new (the Paramount Theatre, the Fulton Tower Jail). Take a look at the face of Atlanta as it evolved over the decade from 1960 to 1969.

Exterior of the historic Paramount Theatre just after it was closed down. in 1960. It was demolished soon after closing down. It was on Peachtree Street beside the Loewâs Grand Theatre right near the intersection with Forsyth.

A look at Atlanta in September 1968, with a caption that reads: âAtlanta's downtown section expands outward and upward, with concrete, glass, steel and aluminum spreading in ever direction. This recent skyline shot spreads from the First National Bank tower (far left) to the bubble-topped Regency Hyatt House (right). In between are such landmarks as the National Bank of Georgia, new Trust Company of Georgia, Equitable Building, Hartford Building, Southern Bell Telephone Co. and Peachtree Center.â

This November 1967 photo was accompanied by this caption: âTwo more scraping the sky. Up and up they go. The Atlanta skyline changes almost daily, particularly as these two structures rise. Left, the new Trust Company of Georgia building, eventually will stand 26 floors above the street with an additional two floors under ground. The Equitable Life Assurance Society building, right, will stand 34 floors high on a site formerly occupied by Piedmont Hotel. The steel frameworks of both are nearly complete."
