Tama may have just been a cute cat to tourists, but she is credited with helping save a struggling train station in Japan.
The female calico died Monday at age 16 from acute heart failure, according to CNN.
Kishi Station was struggling financially when Tama, a local shop owner’s cat, was brought in to serve as honorary stationmaster.
The photogenic cat even wore a cap and badge.
The marketing ploy worked, and visitors started riding the train just to see Tama and take a photo with her. Increased ridership helped preserve the train route for local passengers.
Cat-themed merchandise began popping up at local businesses, eager to take advantage of Tama’s popularity.
CNN reports that a funeral will be held for Tama on Sunday at Kishi Station.
Tourists can still enjoy feline company at the station, as Nitama has already been assisting with stationmaster duties for quite some time.
