Cobb County Genealogical Society kicks off new year with courses

The Cobb County Genealogical Society will offer its annual genealogy course for researchers soon.
The society will offer courses that are an extension of the basics, January 26 through March 2, for beginners and intermediate researchers. The six classes are held on Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Check-in is at 9 a.m. on the first class day.
The first five classes are at the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, 189 Church St. Topics for those classes, from January 26 through February 23, include:

- Immigration & Naturalization: They Left, They Came, and They Stayed
- Using Church Records for Genealogical Research
There also will be a panel discussion. The final class will meet March 2 in the Georgia Room at the Charles D. Switzer Public Library in Marietta to explore the published genealogy materials from all over the country found there. Registration is required, either online or by mail. Greene County under Sheriff Wyatt topic of DeKalb talk
The DeKalb History Center starts a new lecture series, “Hops at the History Center,” on January 16 from 5:30 until 8 p. m. Speakers will be Mayor Emerita Elizabeth Wilson and Claire Hertzler, author of “The High Sheriff of Greene County,” discussing growing up in Greene County under Sheriff Wyatt’s rule. Finding Your Roots, New Series, starts January 8
Henry Louis Gates Jr. returns Tuesday at 8 p.m. with a fifth season of “Finding Your Roots” on PBS/GPB. This series features new celebrities, including Christiane Amanpour, Michael Strahan and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio.
