For nearly four decades, Capitol City Opera has aimed to make theater more accessible to audiences and provide opportunities for classically trained performers in the Atlanta area.
Now, the company will kick off its 37th season with Gounod's “Roméo et Juliette.”
Based on Shakespeare’s classic tale, the show follows the family rivalry between the Capulets and Montagues.
The company’s first fully staged French opera will open on March 6 at the Contant Performing Arts Center at Oglethrope University, 4484 Peachtree Rd NE, Brookhaven.
The opera, which is set in 14th century Verona, will be performed in French with English supertitles.
The show is fully cast with Atlanta-based performers. It will be directed by Michael Nutter, with music director by Catherine Giel. The chamber orchestra will be conducted by Michael Giel. Rachel Eve Holmes will portray Juliette and Michael Vavases will be Romeo.
Tickets for the performances range from $30-$40.
Capitol City Opera was founded in 1983, with the goal of expanding opera's footprint in metro Atlanta. The nonprofit company has toured throughout the Southeast. Each year, the opera employs about 60 local performers and estimates that it reaches an annual audience of about 20,000 people.
The company performs a fully staged opera each year, along with a monthly restaurant performance, summer concerts and opera outreach performances for kids.
“The company strives to make opera available to all segments of the population including the disadvantaged and makes a concerted effort to help everyone understand and appreciate opera,” according to its website.
