Whether you want to play it simple or load up on gear, here are some camping basics to help you enjoy the great outdoors.

Lights on

Coleman’s LED Quad Lantern is four lights in one. The handy, battery-operated lantern features four detachable panels, all with handles. Remove a panel and use it to light your way from the bathroom back to your tent in the middle of the night. Each panel has its own on-and-off switch. The lightweight lantern uses eight D batteries (not included). It’s a good choice for families with small children. Available for $74.99 at Sears and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

No-sweat tent

Want a family tent that is roomy and quick to set up? Try the new Instant Tent by Coleman. The pre-attached pole system is the secret to its easy assembly. The spacious, two-room tent is 14 by 10 feet, with a center height of 6 1/2 feet. You will appreciate the extra space, which can be used for changing clothes and storage. Other features include two doors, seven windows for views and ventilation and thick waterproof walls. Available for $182.41 at amazon.com. Don’t forget a ground cloth or tarp to go under the tent. And no matter what tent you buy, practice setting it up at home before you head into the wild.

What’s for dinner?

The two-burner camp stove is a good choice for small families and outdoorsy types. But Coleman’s InstaStart Two-Burner Stove, with fast, matchless lighting, is even better. Easy to clean, the propane-powered model lets you cook burgers and warm up soup at the same time. Side panels shield the burners from wind. Propane cylinder sold separately. Available for $89.99 at The Sports Authority and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Sleep easy

If the ground is hard, cold or rocky, it will be tough to sleep tight at your campsite. A sleeping bag will help you warm. But veteran campers know to take along an air mattress or foam sleeping pad and the thicker, the better. For pack-and-go ease, try a self-inflating Therm-a-Rest pad ($45 to $210 for the super-plus Dreamtime mattress) at REI. In January, the new Trail Scout mattress will be available. It is comfy, warm and available in four sizes ($40 to $60).

Campfire babies

Today’s go-go parents often take a portable baby crib when they hit the road. At 11 pounds, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is a hands-down favorite for infants and toddlers to age 3. The portable crib is easy to carry and a cinch to set up and take down. Set up the sturdy crib when you get to your campsite and keep baby safe and contained while you unload the minivan. Available for $279.99 at area Babies R Us stores or online. P.S. Don’t forget to pack the potty chair for toddlers-in-training.

Fun-to-have gear

  • Hands-free head lamp. Perfect for car, camping, beach walks and home. Petzl headlamps are $19.95 at REI.
  • Hand-held GPS unit for geocaching, an outdoor, online treasure hunt. "This is a huge national hobby," said Kim Hatcher, veteran camper and spokeswoman for the Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites. The Garmin eTrex H ($99.95 at REI) is a good entry-level unit.

Try before you buy

Before you invest in camping equipment, borrow gear or rent it. REI rents gear and offers advice. Selection and availability vary. Call Atlanta-area REI stores to reserve equipment (tents, sleeping bags, stoves, backpacks) for busy fall weekends.

Must-have gear

  • Camping box. Keep it packed and ready to go so you never forget the basics. Include plates, cups, flatware, cutting board, bottle opener, foil, plastic trash bags, baby wipes, matches (in waterproof container), camp cookware, camp sink or tub (for washing), first-aid kit, shovel, hammer, camp knife, sunscreen, bug spray and extra toilet paper.
  • Coolers (one for meals; another for drinks and snacks)
  • Water. About a gallon of water per person per day.
  • Nylon sling chairs. After a while, you tire of sitting on rocks and picnic benches.
  • Rain poncho or jackets.
