As the world began reeling from the news of Kobe Bryant’s shocking death in a helicopter accident on Sunday that also killed eight other people, including Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna, people began sharing their own memories of the basketball star.

One such tribute came from ESPN anchor Elle Duncan.

In a video that’s gone viral, Duncan recalled the one time she met Bryant.

At the time, Duncan was pregnant. When she told Bryant she was having a girl, he said “girls are the best,” Duncan recalled.

“I would have five more girls if I could. I am a girl dad,” Duncan recalled Bryant saying. Bryant and his wife Vanessa had four daughters.

The video has set off a series of tributes on social media from dads proudly claiming the #girldad title.

On Wednesday, evening Bernice King added her own tribute to the mix.

In a tweet, King shared photos of her father, Martin Luther King Jr., playing with her and her older sister Yolanda with the hashtag #girldad.

In a reply to Duncan, King said, "Your piece was so beautiful. And I really think the #girldad tag is helping people. You've contributed to comfort and healing."

Healthcare at College Park, a nursing home in Fulton County, GA, stands shuttered with its door chained on July 26, 2025, having closed in recent months. Researchers at Brown University developed a list of U.S. nursing homes they predicted were at risk of closing based on 2023 data, and would be at elevated risk of closing due to the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act's cuts to Medicaid. Healthcare at College Park was on their list. It survived past its last federal inspection in August of 2024 but has now closed down. The bill's biggest provisions will roll out over years starting Jan. 1. (Ariel Hart/AJC)
