A mysterious man who left a $1,500 tip for a waitress is speaking out about his good deed.
The man, who identifies himself as Briggs VanNess, walked into a Denny's in Utah and asked a strange question.
"Today I met an angel," a waitress said in a Facebook post on the Love What Matters page. "You asked me, 'Can I have a waitress who is a single mother?'"
The man was seated in waitress Crystal's section. He paid for seven families' bills, totaling about $600, according to VanNess.
“I asked, ‘Why did you do that?’ You simply said, ‘Family is everything, I’ve lost all mine,’” the waitress wrote.
At the end of his meal, VanNess left the waitress a $1,500 tip on a $21.34 bill.
“Crystal told me she prayed the night before for a miracle, and God sent you,” the waitress wrote.
VanNess told KRIV the reason behind his random act of kindness.
“I grew up with a single mother of six — we were poor and homeless a lot,” VanNess said. “But I watched and suffered for years as I watched her work her hands to the bone to give us a good life … Many years down the road I was facing prison and getting in trouble and it ended up causing me to lose my family because I was a really terrible person.”
The waitress who witnessed the exchange had one simple thing to say to him: “Thank you.”
