14 things to do in Atlanta before summer ends

We have good news and we have bad news.

The bad news: Summer is almost over. The good news, though, is that there is still so much to do.

From festivals to lobster rolls and swimming in every body of water that can be found, here is your 2015 end of summer bucket list.

Get on a river: Grab a kayak, a boat or a float and get to the Chattahoochee. You only have a few more weekends to explore our main waterway. Spending a day with your toes in the water while soaking up the sun is a fabulous way to say goodbye to the summer.

Eat a lobster roll: For being land-locked, Atlantans love their seafood. So head to any number of local restaurants to eat a lobster roll during the height of the season. Sweet lobster meat is tossed in butter or mayo and nestled into a toasted bun. Ideally, pair it with a crisp, light local brew for summer nirvana.

Party on a patio: What better way to spend an evening than on a patio with a drink in your hand? One Midtown Kitchen, Parish and Tap have done the heavy-lifting for patio lovers by hosting its Summer Swag promotion until Aug. 31, which allows patrons to enjoy $20 off their food and drinks. (Patrons must spend at least $40 to enjoy the discount.)

Ride a roller coaster: Six Flags over Georgia opened a new ride to public this year,  New Revolution at Dare Devil Dive roller coaster.  Keep an eye out for their annual Halloween celebrations, Fright Fest.

Go to DragonCon: Every Labor Day weekend, Atlanta is invaded by Storm Troopers, Thor and any number of folks from Westeros. Dragon Con is the world's largest fantasy and sci-fi convention. Held downtown, tickets start at $40 for day passes. If you don't want to pay, be sure to check out the annual parade on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m. It's free to watch.

Get your rosé on: It's the wine of the summer, so get your fill of the pink stuff while the weather is still hot. Wine shops like 3 Parks and Perrine's guide customers to the perfect bottle. Make a day of it and try a tasting at Vine & Tap in Buckhead.

Cool down with a beer fest: It seems that nearly every weekend there is a beer festival. And understandably: With local breweries putting out amazing beer constantly, Atlanta has definitely taken notice.

Head to the roof: Treat yourself to an afternoon at one of the many rooftop pools at Atlanta hotels. There are plenty of ways to get in. If you don't want to stay the night, The W Hotel in Buckhead offers Sunday pool passes on Sundays through Sept. 25.

Swimming hole: There are plenty of options in North Georgia to go swimming in the great outdoors. Just a short drive away, you'll find sliding rocks, creeks and spring fed lakes. Just don't forget your sunscreen.

•  Farmers market: It's the height of Georgia produce season. Sweet and juicy tomatoes, crisp corn, and candy-like watermelons are everywhere. Get the cream of the crop directly from the people growing it at one of more than 35 farmer's markets around.

•  Visit the College Football Hall of Fame: Around this time of year, you can start feeling football in the air. Being the South, college football rules the land. While kickoff is still a few days away, you can get your fix by visiting Downtown's College Football Hall of Fame. Take an interactive tour through the history of the sport that is personalized according to your favorite team.

Explore some caves: The heat is still intense, so get a little taste of Mother Nature's cooling system in one of Georgia's system of caves. Don't head down there alone! Groups like Georgia Girl Guides offer tours for every level of experience.

Hike to some waterfalls: Take an easy hike and explore some of Atlanta's beautiful waterfalls. You don't have to drive all the way to the mountains to enjoy them. So grab the pup and head to spots like Cochran Hills and Sweetwater Park.

• Try a camping alternative: It may be too hot for some to go camping, but these long summer nights deserve to be savored outside. Luckily, Georgia offers many alternatives to the traditional tent pitching. From yurts to dome tents and even an Airstream experience, you'll find something. Just be sure to pack the s'mores kit.
