The plucky and unpretentious beach community located just minutes from Savannah said Tuesday it had reset the date of its 12th Annual Pirate Fest for Oct. 28-30. Originally slated to take place Oct. 7 - 9, the beloved event featuring everything from fireworks and a Pirate Victory Parade to a "Walk the Plank" pub crawl and the crowning of the festival king and queen, was postponed at the last minute as Hurricane Matthew approached.
Tybee Island was physically battered by the hurricane — but its funloving spirit appears to have emerged unscathed. The popular festival gets going on Friday, Oct. 28 with live entertainment by Delbert McClinton and others from 5-11 p.m., the opening of the Thieves and Gypsies Market and much more. Saturday's highlights include a costume contest, the parade from 3 - 5 p.m. and fireworks lighting up the night sky over the island's eastern beaches starting at 11:30 p.m. On Sunday, things wrap up with The Buccanneers Ball (and those "royal" coronations) at The Crab Shack from 6-10 p.m.
Tickets range from $12 for a one-day pass on Friday up to $25 for a weekend pass (Buccanneers Ball tickets cost $50). All previously purchased tickets will be honored.
