National Parks Week is coming up, so that means one free day at some of the state’s most beautiful parks.
Each April, the National Park Service, in partnership with its nonprofit arm National Park Foundation, celebrate America’s natural treasures with National Park Week. This year the week begins Saturday, April 20 and ends Sunday, April 28.
The week will entail a variety of activities and special days that honor national parks, including National Junior Ranger Day, Wild Wednesday, Friendship Friday and more.
The free park entry day will kickoff the week of events.
“The entrance fee-free days hosted by the National Park Service are special opportunities to invite visitors, volunteers and veterans to celebrate some important moments for our parks and opportunities for service in those parks,” P. Daniel Smith, National Park Service deputy director, said in a statement.
About 115 of the 418 parks across the country regularly charge an entrance fee, which range between $3 to $30 per admission.
On Saturday, April 20, residents across Georgia can explore the following nature and historical sites for free:
Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Oglethorpe,
Cumberland Island National Seashore in St. Mary's
Fort Pulaski National Monument in Savannah
All of these state attractions will also waive admission fees on dates in August, September and November.
Here are the additional days to mark your calendar for free entry into these nature and historical sites in 2017:
- Sunday, Aug. 25: National Park Service Anniversary
- Saturday, Sept. 28:: National Public Lands Day
- Monday, Nov. 11: Veterans Day
