Lester Holt has been named permanent anchor of 'NBC Nightly News," NBC News officials said Thursday.
The network said that Brian Williams will not return as anchor.
1. Lester Holt will take over the anchor position full time: Holt joined MSNBC in 2000 and later assumed duties at NBC News as a substitute anchor. He first substituted for Williams in 2013 while he was on medical leave.
2. Brian Williams may act as Holt's backup for NBC News special reports: NBC News announced that in addition to his role as MSNBC anchor of breaking news, Williams will fill in as a breaking news anchor for NBC News live special reports when Holt is not available.
3. Lester Holt will be the first African-American solo anchor of the evening news: The announcement will make Holt the first African-American to host a TV-network newscast solo. Max Robinson co anchored ABC's "World News Tonight" in the 1970s.
4. Brian Williams will break his silence in an interview: Brian Williams was interviewed by Matt Lauer earlier in the week. The taped interview is scheduled to air Friday.
5. Chairman of NBC News says, "Brian now has the chance to earn back everyone's trust.": In a statement, Andrew Lack, chairman of NBC News and MSNBC, praised Williams, indicating that his 22 years at NBC News have earned him the opportunity to regain the trust of viewers.
