Thomas Fekete, guitarist for the West Palm Beach, Florida, indie-rock band Surfer Blood, died on Monday after an 18-month battle with cancer. He was 27.
According to Fekete's GoFundMe page, his wife Jessica said, that he died at home in his sleep by her side. "May we all carry on Thomas' legacy by being the very best versions of ourselves for the rest of our days, and do as much as we can to help others in his honor. If we can strive to be half the person Thomas was, this world will be a better place," she wrote in an update on the page.
The band formed in South Florida before getting their break at festivals such as South by Southwest and the CMJ festival, which went over well for them.
"We were freaking out, hoping to get one CMJ show," Fekete told the Post in 2009. "We ended up having to deny a couple. That was bizarre. "It was a lot of work, but totally worth it. We couldn't have asked for better shows."
According to the GoFundMe page, Jessica plans to host a memorial event during the first week of July since Fekete's birthday was July 1. The couple married and Fekete was told a month after the wedding that the cancer had returned, SouthFlorida.com reports.
The band posted a message on Twitter in remembrance of Fekete. He had to exit their tour for their latest album, "1000 Palms," which came out in 2015 after his re-diagnosis, SouthFlorida.com added.
