A new assortment of Star Wars merchandise isn’t supposed to go on sale until 12:01 a.m. Friday morning, but at one Florida retailer a fan was able to score some of the coveted items early.
On Tuesday, one Palm Beach County fan reported purchasing Star Wars: The Force Awakens items at the Walmart in Boynton Beach. Although Walmart’s cash registers are programmed to block the sale by displaying a message that says the items are not for sale, the shopper said the cashier was able to override the system and sell him the Star Wars items anyway.
At the Walmart in Pembroke Pines in southwestern Broward County, a few The Force Awakens items were on the shelves. However, a price scanner did not give the prices, but displayed a message to see a store attendant.
At the register, when the item was scanned, a message that read, “Sale not allowed” came up. A store manager said the item could not be sold because it had been “recalled.” No additional information was given.
Retailers across the country will open their doors at 12:01 a.m. on Friday as sci-fi fans rush to be among the first to purchase a new assortment of Star Wars merchandise.
All Wamart and Toys R Us will be opened for the midnight reveal, while Target plans to open 207 of its stores across the country for "Force Friday".
Those among the first shoppers at Toys R Us will receive a FREE poster to mark the occasion. Quantities are limited, according to the Toys R Us website.
The Disney Store will give a FREE commemorative Star Wars: The Force Awakens pin to the first 100 guests who make a purchase on Force Friday. The promotion is limited to one per guest, and guests must be at least 3 years old to receive the pin.
All Disney Store locations throughout North America will open on Force Friday with Star Wars-themed opening ceremonies, offering a galactic twist on the traditional "Unlocking Imagination" ritual, according to the retailer's website.
The Disney Store said other Force Friday events will include:
- R2-D2 craft activity
- Ways of the Force
- Star Wars Story Time
- Art of Drawing: R2-D2
- Free Topps vintage trading card giveaway upon completion of an in-store event and while supplies last
- Epic Star Wars theming that pays homage to both the Dark Side and the Light
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18.
