We’ve always known that André “3000” Benjamin is an artsy type, but now he’s showcasing his ambitions literally.
Benjamin, half of renowned Atlanta hip-hop duo Outkast, has teamed with filmmaker Greg Brunkalla and painter Jimmy O’Neal for an exhibition presented by the Savannah College of Art and Design and the SCAD Museum of Art.
Dubbed “I Feel Ya: SCAD + André 3000 Benjamin,” the exhibit will debut at Mana Miami in South Florida with a display from Dec. 3-14.
After its premiere in Miami, “I Feel Ya: SCAD + André 3000 Benjamin” travels to the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, where it will be on view in summer 2015.
Outkast fans will recall seeing Benjamin’s jumpsuits — complete with phrases emblazoned on the front — during the group’s 20th anniversary tour this year. The 47 jumpsuits created for the tour will be part of the display to showcase Benjamin’s “musings and observations — a response to today’s content-heavy digital landscape, which provides an unrelenting flood of images and opinions.”
The exhibit will also contain large-scale abstract paintings from O’Neal and an experimental film from SCAD alumnus Brunkalla, “Trumpets,” which was conceived and directed by Brunkalla and produced at SCAD’s Savannah Film Studios. The film uses the thoughts and expressions on the jumpsuits as a creative point of departure to build a broader conversation about language and context.
“As I initially thought about displaying this collection, I immediately knew I wanted to work with my longtime collaborative partners at SCAD,” Benjamin said in a statement. “The diverse group of people that come to Miami for Art Basel Miami Beach are the right audience to see this for the first time.”
