Finally appearing in the Bay Area after a string of cancelled concert appearances over the past few years, British rock singer Morrissey got an extra-enthusiastic response from his audience in San Jose when fans overran the stage during an encore.

The onetime frontman for The Smiths and longtime solo star was playing the City National Civic Center in San Jose Wednesday evening when excited followers rushed the stage as the singer performed the tune "One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell" as part of a second encore.

A video posted on YouTube shot by a fan in near the front of the stage shows one fan after another getting on stage to hug the singer during an encore performance of the song.

Security escorted each fan off the stage. The 54-year-old Morrissey appears to take it all in stride and continues to perform even when a shirtless man comes up to try to hug him.

The concert eventually came to a halt when a man rushed the stage and tackled Morrissey, knocking him to the ground.

Security then moved in and the band stops playing, ending the concert.

While the so-called stage invasions by Morrissey's fans are a regular part of his concerts, some local fans expressed some disappointment after having waited for so many years to see the singer make a return visit to the Bay Area.
