Young, 32, grew up playing the trumpet in Charleston, S.C. He began his career with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and recently served as resident conductor for the Phoenix Symphony. Although he just joined the ASO in July, he has conducted a host of major symphonies across the country.
Accomplishments: Young was a semi-finalist in the 2013 Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition in Bamberg, Germany. "That really launched my career," he says. "It has given me a number of wonderful opportunities around the world."
Upcoming: Young conducts the ASO's first Family Concert of the season Oct. 25. "Halloween Spooktacular" includes compositions from Harry Potter films and Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain." On Nov. 22, he conducts the 120-member youth orchestra in a program that includes Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4.
