HEAR WHAT, WHERE AND WHY
• The event: Atlanta funk-rockers Whild Peach at Sugar Hill Thursday night.
• The bonus: Power vocalists Joi, Keisha Jackson and Eva Kennedy are scheduled to join the band, who lost their fiery frontwoman — Peach — to breast cancer in April 2007.
• The Peach they knew: "Was my best friend, she was my sister," Joi says. "And I just miss her tremendously every day. Music misses her. The pure arts scene in this city missed her. And whatever I can do while I'm here to carry out her legacy, I'll keep it rolling...But to be honest with you, it's still hard for me to even conceptualize, get my mind around the fact that she's gone."
"Wow. Wow. Peach was a sister to me, like an older sister," continues Jackson. "She was the freeest person I've ever met. Not inhibited about anything. She was very true to her faith, very true to her friends. And she lived by example.
"I was just telling my daughter, you know, how fortunate we are as artists that we can deposit a part of ourselves that can live forever. I was listening to a song that [Peach's husband, guitarist David] Whild wants me to do, and just hearing her voice again just moved something in me. This crazy energy. She was so alive. And I mean, especially with Bernie Mac dying, and then Isaac Hayes, it just reminds us once again to make the most of our time here. You know, make sure you leave something that counts. Because Peach never faked the funk. She was the funk."
• The Peach you may not have known: She and other members of Whild Peach toured and recorded with OutKast. The band's song "Mutron Angel" was featured on the Atlanta rap-duo's "Idlewild" soundtrack.
"Peach's voice would almost make you afraid she would get so deep in you," noted Antwan "Big Boi" Patton of OutKast. "Talk about soul power! Goodness!"
