ROSWELL
Howard Alden at Unitarian Universalist Metro Atlanta North
The Six String Social Club’s concert series keeps on strumming with a performance by this acclaimed jazz ax man. While fans may know Alden best for his countless recordings, he’s been immortalized on celluloid, too. His virtuosity can be heard on the soundtrack to the 1999 Woody Allen flick “Sweet and Lowdown.” Alden played the guitar solos in the movie, and coached star Sean Penn along the way. The Newport Beach, Calif., native appropriately served as the guitarist and musical director for a 2004 tour commemorating the Newport Jazz Festival’s 50th anniversary. Although his playing runs the gamut, don’t be surprised to hear Alden tip his hat to the style of Django Reinhardt, as heard on his disc “I Remember Django.”
8 p.m. July 20. $30-35. Unitarian Universalist Metro Atlanta North, 11420 Crabapple Road, Roswell, 770-365-7738, www.sixstringsocialclub.com.
