HAMPTON
Atlanta Zombie Run at Atlanta Motor Speedway
The zombie craze definitely has legs. And for this event the undead are wearing running shoes. The scares come from the screen to the street for this version of the touring 5K fun run and walk. The Atlanta Motor Speedway and the surrounding property get a makeover in order to resemble a post-apocalyptic movie set. Participants sign up to be runners or zombies. The zombie slots, however, are sold out, and limited on-site registration will be available. Approximately 350 guests in zombified makeup chase runners and walkers to the finish. To heighten the experience runners are given the option of wearing three life balloons around their waists. It’s up to the zombies to try to pop them. Spectators are invited to watch the horror for free. Everyone is welcome at the Quarantine Party, which takes place after the race. Power 96.1 DJ Mami Chuala spins high-energy tunes, and food and libations will be available for purchase.
10 a.m. June 8. $50 per runner; $45 per runner for teams of four or more; free for spectators. Atlanta Motor Speedway, 1500 Tara Place, Hampton. www.thezombierun.com.
CANTON
“The Hallelujah Girls” at the Canton Theatre
Cherokee Theatre Company’s last play of the season takes the stage in a decidedly Southern fashion. Written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, this production is set in the fictional town of Eden Falls, Ga. A group of middle-age women decide to cope with the death of a friend by facing their lives head on. This means dealing with a bevy of comedic obstacles ranging from a delinquent son to a hunky ex-boyfriend. The ladies plot their life changes while gathering every Friday afternoon at Spa-Dee-Dah!, an abandoned church that’s been transformed into a day spa.
8 p.m. June 7-8 and 14-15; 2:30 p.m. June 9 and 16. $12-$15. The Canton Theatre, 171 E. Main St., Canton. 770-591-0282, www.cherokeetheatre.org.
MABLETON
Rhythm and Romance at Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre
If you typically use smooth jazz as a soundtrack for sexual healing, this quadruple bill may set the tone for the rest of the evening. Saxophonist Marion Meadows will likely play cuts, including “Black Pearl,” from his latest disc, “Whisper.” Locals may recognize trumpeter Joey Sommerville, who was responsible for creating the Smooth Jazz After Dark series at Sambuca Jazz Café in 2007. Acclaimed vocalist Phil Perry and Grammy-nominated keyboardist Jeff Lorber make up the other half of the lineup. You can make it a romantic picnic by bringing food and drink in a personal-size cooler or basket. The concession stand offers grub and libations, too, and a catered meal can be ordered in advance at the amphitheatre website (www.mablehouse.org).
6 p.m. June 8. $25-$75 plus Ticketmaster fees. Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre, 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton. 800-745-3000, www.ticketmaster.com.
