The Urban League of Greater Atlanta will honor actress and singer Keke Palmer during an event planned for noon on Friday at Twelve Hotel at Atlantic Station.
Palmer, known for her starring role in “Akeelah and the Bee” as well as roles in “Madea’s Family Reunion,” “Joyful Noise” and “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story,” will receive the Spirit of the League award.
"We cannot advance as a people without investing in our youth," said Nancy Flake Johnson, president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Atlanta, a civil rights organization dedicated to economic and civic empowerment. She noted "the importance of letting these young people know when they are doing the right thing, applauding them for it and supporting them in keeping it up."
Other honorees will include Jovan Gay, Rontavious Stovall, Adrecus Culbreath, Hancy Aldeclat and Domence Flannigan. Channel 2 Action News reporter Erica Byfield will serve as emcee, and the teen jazz band Fusion and the Tri-Cities High School band will perform.

Chefs, sommeliers team up for a cause
The ninth annual Give Me Five dinner, benefiting Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign, is planned for Aug. 16 at the Piedmont Driving Club. The event begins with a 5 p.m. cocktail reception followed by the seated dinner and live and silent auctions. The event will feature honorary chef Jay Yarbrough of the Piedmont Driving Club along with Chad Anderson of Oak Steakhouse, Eric Wolitzky of Fifth Group Restaurants, Linton Hopkins of Restaurant Eugene and Holeman & Finch and Zeb Stevenson of Watershed. Pairing each course will be the star sommeliers headed by wine columnist Gil Kulers, Caleb Hopkins of Atlas Restaurant, Clarke Anderson of No. 246, Perrine Prieur of Perrine's Wine Shop and Silvio Garcia of the Cherokee Town and Country Club.
