Actor Jamie Foxx, who was among the honorees at the 2015 Trumpet Awards in January, is back in Atlanta for a new movie project.

"Sleepless Night," about an undercover cop hunting for his kidnapped son, also stars Gabrielle Union, star of the locally shot BET show "Being Mary Jane," Scoot McNairy of the locally shot AMC series "Halt and Catch Fire," and Atlanta actor-rapper T.I.

Foxx stopped by the Georgia Aquarium the other day and was so taken with the whale sharks that he bought a stuffed version as a souvenir.

In other local movie news, "Passengers," a sci-fi thriller with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, is among the slew of movies filming here this summer. J-Law is of course no stranger to Atlanta, having filmed the second, third and fourth "Hunger Games" movies here: "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay" parts 1 and 2.

Jennifer Garner, newly split from Ben Affleck, will star in "Miracles From Heaven." Based on the book "Three Miracles From Heaven" by Christy Beam, the movie about a girl miraculously cured from a rare disorder also stars Martin Henderson, Hannah Alligood and Courtney Fansler. Author and evangelist T.D. Jakes is one of the producers. Garner previously filmed "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" in metro Atlanta.

The fall social season awaits

Mid-July is the time Atlanta's fall social calendar starts filling up. Philanthropic power trio Lila Hertz, Jeffrey McQuithy and Louise Sams team up once again for the 22nd annual Jeffrey Fashion Cares fashion show and reception and live auction, planned for 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the American Cancer Society Center, 250 Williams St. downtown. It benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure — Greater Atlanta Affiliate and the Atlanta AIDS Fund.

The Fashion Cares after-party will be held at STK Atlanta in Midtown. (I'm not saying you'll definitely run into Chris Evans there or anything but the "Captain America: Civil War" star has been seen there numerous times since the Marvel blockbuster started filming in Atlanta.) Tickets start at $500 and are available online starting July 15. See jeffreyfashioncares.com.

Suzanne Crafts Booher and Alison Womack Jowers co-chair the 17th annual Corps de Ballet luncheon benefiting the Atlanta Ballet. It's planned for 11 a.m. Oct. 5 at the InterContinental hotel. Individual tickets begin at $135. See atlantaballet.com.
