"Sully," a movie directed by Clint Eastwood about the heroics of US Airways Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, will film here this fall.

Tom Hanks reportedly will portray the courageous pilot, whose grace under pressure saved all passengers aboard when he skillfully landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in New York on Jan. 15, 2009.

Both Eastwood and Hanks have filmed high-profile projects in Georgia. Eastwood directed the memorable "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," the portrait of Savannah's batty aristocracy amid a murder trial, based on John Berendt's book. More recently, Eastwood directed and starred in "Trouble With the Curve," with Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams.

Hanks filmed one of his most iconic projects in Savannah, “Forrest Gump,” and more recently has served as an executive producer for the TV miniseries “Lewis and Clark,” portions of which filmed outside Atlanta.

Festival celebrates women in film

Women in Film & Television Atlanta received a record number of submissions for this year's festival. I was honored to serve as one of the judges, a nearly impossible task given the outstanding entries. You can view the submissions at WIFTA's upcoming screenings, planned for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 14 (short film night) and 5 p.m. Sept. 15 (documentary feature night) at the Plaza Theatre, 1049 Ponce de Leon Ave. N.E., Atlanta. Admission to each screening is $10 and tickets to the reception and awards ceremony that follow both nights are each $15. See WIFTAFilmSeries2015.eventbrite.com for full details and to buy tickets.
