Q&A / ABIGAIL BRESLIN, ACTOR: Role shows tweens' life in Depression

"Little Miss Sunshine" Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin is 12. For four years she's collected the popular American Girl dolls.

For the record, she has Addie, Kit, Felicity, Kaya, Molly ... "I have all of them," she says during a recent visit to Atlanta.

Kit is Kit Kittredge, the historical-character doll with a story line involving the Depression.

Abigail also portrays Kit in the new Picturehouse and New Line Cinema drama "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl," opening today at Alpharetta's North Point Market as part of a five-city exclusive debut (the five cities all have American Girl stores) before expanding to theaters nationwide on July 2.

During its initial exclusive run, "Kit Kittredge" tickets are $20 each and include a T-shirt, which sort of raised a question, which we tossed at Abigail.

Q: Your movie is aimed at young girls. How do you feel that, until later, all tickets are $20?

A: That's a lot of money. I don't get that much money in my allowance. I get $12 in my allowance.

Q: So you couldn't even buy a ticket to your own movie?

A: Not unless I save up.

Q: You've mentioned your grandmother lived during the Depression. After making the movie, what is your overall view of that era?

A: You know the Depression was the time when everyone had to buy on credit and then they were nervous that they wouldn't have money to pay it back. So they stopped buying things. And then people at the store stopped selling because they didn't have anything to sell. And the factories stopped working because they didn't have anything to give to the stores.

Q: I know you know Dakota Fanning and the last time I spoke to her she kept grossing me out because she likes to eat boiled peanuts. Is there anything you eat that other people might think is gross?

A: Um, I don't know ... I really ... You want to know something gross? I eat the skins off of baked potatoes. It's gross but it tastes so good. And I also like Oreos dipped in peanut butter.

Q: If you could pick your role of a lifetime, what would it be?

A: Lady Jane Grey. And Helen Keller.

What comes next for Abigail: She co-stars with Cameron Diaz, Jason Patric, Sofia Vassilieva and Alec Baldwin in "My Sister's Keeper," planned for 2009. Abigail plays a daughter who legally challenges her parents after discovering she was conceived as a bone marrow match for her older sister, who suffers from leukemia.
