Mason’s debut collection, “Shiloh & Other Stories,” explored the effect of modernization on the rural and small-town poor of western Kentucky. Her first novel, “In Country,” about the daughter of a Vietnam vet, is taught widely and was made into a film. In 2000 her memoir “Clear Springs” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
