What’s going on in some of the metro area’s other notable dining neighborhoods? Here’s a quick look:
Buckhead:
It looks as if the glamour has finally returned to the tony enclave that used to be synonymous with fine dining in this city. King + Duke in One Buckhead Plaza attracts both serious diners and serious partiers for impressive dishes cooked on its massive centerpiece charcoal grill. Umi, across the courtyard in Two Buckhead Plaza, gets a lot of A-list celebrities coming for exemplary sushi and a chic moneyed vibe. The intersection of West Paces Ferry and Peachtree roads should be renamed Little L.A. On the other hand, the less sceney STG Trattoria couldn’t make a go. The neighborhood could use another smart, casual dining option.
Midtown:
The Edgewood Avenue stretch of the Old Fourth Ward has finally hit a critical mass with options as diverse as Sound Table, Noni’s and Joystick Gamebar. Whereas diners used to park and scurry into their destinations, they now spend more time on the street, which feels more inviting. The anticipated February opening of Staplehouse from chefs Ryan Hidinger and Ryan Smith will be huge. Further along, the Beltline has shown that Kevin Rathbun Steak, Two Urban Licks and Barcelona — far apart as the car chugs — are near neighbors when you bike or walk.
Marietta Square:
If you haven’t walked the square in a while, it’s time you get back. The recent opening of the Butcher the Baker — a country-cool spot with an always-packed bar and contemporary Southern cooking — gives the young, diverse crowd here the restaurant they’ve long wanted. Kiosco Colombian Restaurant, across the square, fills nightly with fans of the restaurant’s signature bandeja paesa — a heaping plate of steak and sausage with garnishes. Things are only going to get better. Expect a Decatur-style craft cocktail bar or three before long.
