Sandy Springs-based UPS officially opened a healthcare package delivery distribution center in China on Thursday as part of an expanded push to serve the Asia market.

UPS said the center, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, represents a significant expansion of its Asia healthcare distribution network.

The package delivery company opened its first Asia healthcare facility in Singapore in 2011, and also has facilities in Shanghai, China, and Sydney, Australia. The company has 41 dedicated healthcare facilities globally.

“China represents one of the most important markets for UPS and our customers,” Jim Barber, president of UPS International, said in announcing the newest facility in the country. “To capture this growth of consumer demand in healthcare, as well as increase presence in China, we are investing in bringing the best-in-class solutions to our customers.”

UPS said the new Hangzhou facility has space that is designed to meet the specific storage and distribution needs of pharmaceutical companies, reducing their need to build and invest in their own distribution warehouses.
