UPS Freight customers will now be able to assign reference numbers to their shipments, speeding up the pickup process and improving visibility.

The pickup notifications for less-than-truckload customers will alert shippers when a UPS driver is on the way, and when packages have been picked up.

A spokeswoman for the company said the new technology will make shipments easier to find. They will then move out more quickly.

Notifications can be sent to five email addresses. The notifications are free for UPS Freight customers who log onto ups.com to schedule pickups. Beginning in January, it will be available for customers scheduling freight pickups in UPS WorldShip and My LTL Freight.
