Big box retailers are not the only ones planning to open their doors on Thanksgiving Day.

In a first for several malls, the Mall of Georgia, Town Center at Cobb and Northlake Mall announced on Thursday that they will open at 8 p.m. on the holiday.

The move follows a trend among retailers this year to try to lure consumers in just hours after they have finished their turkey, dressing and other holiday fare.

The early jump bucks the traditional start of the shopping season on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

Walmart and Best Buy will open at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, while Macy’s, JCPenney, Sears, Target and Kohl’s will open at 8 p.m. Officials at Old Navy said more than 900 of its stores will open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving, with most of them reopening again at 7 p.m.

Discount chain Kmart will beat all of the above when it opens at 6 a.m. on the holiday.

Lenox Square Mall, one of the busiest shopping centers in the South, will open at midnight Friday morning while nearby Phipps Plaza will open at 8 a.m. Friday.

To make it more enticing, the Mall of Georgia is offering a holiday ornament to the first 250 customers who register at guest services, while the first 100 who do the same at Town Center will receive a “Black Friday Weekend” survival kit.
