Spirit Airlines announced it will sponsor the ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon as the official airline of the March 21, 2010 race. Spirit would not disclose financial terms of the agreement. "We know there are two large carriers in Atlanta and we're just trying to eke out our little piece of that business as well," said Spirit spokesman Michael Pewther. US Road Sports and Entertainment Group, which owns the Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon, said Spirit has the resources to provide out-of-town participants with "low-cost transportation." Spirit operates one route from Atlanta, flying to its hub in Fort Lauderdale twice a day. It plans to add a route from Atlanta to Myrtle Beach, S.C. starting May 1.
