Southern Co. said Thursday it has bought a 2.5 megawatt solar farm in Granville County, N.C.

The acquisition is the energy giant’s fourth as part of a partnership with Turner Renewable Energy, owned by Ted Turner. The other projects are in Nevada and New Mexico and total 70 megawatts. One MW of solar power can provide enough electricity for a large department store.

SunEdison, a major installer and financial backer of solar power, will build and operate the project, which will be on 40 acres. The project is expected to start producing power next month.

Southern will sell the electricity to Progress Energy Carolinas, now owned by Charlotte-based Duke Energy. Granville County is north of Raleigh and borders Virginia.
