Local officials gathered to celebrate the opening Tuesday of a newly-renovated Delta Flight Museum, saying they want to promote it along with other major attractions like the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola.

Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson, Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed gathered with hundreds of Delta employees and others for the opening event. Reed said they plan to partner with the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau to integrate the Delta museum into promotions to visitors.

After $10 million of improvements, the Delta Flight Museum is now open to the general public six days a week, instead of by appointment only. General admission for adults is $12.

The funding for the renovation came from an $8.4 million grant from the Delta Air Lines Foundation, along with corporate sponsorships and individuals’ brick donations.

Anderson said the museum is also a place for Delta employees and retirees around the world to “come home” and visit.

The 68,000 square-foot museum housed in adjoining 1940s-era hangars at Delta’s headquarters near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport features historic aircraft, a Boeing 737-200 full-motion flight simulator, a theater, conference room and gift shop.
