It’s lights out for the Westin signs above the Westin Peachtree Plaza in downtown Atlanta. Officials pulled the plug on the brightly-lit signs — one faces north, the other south — on Monday to prepare to take the large 20-foot letters off the hotel.

The Westin is in the process of replacing all its 6,350 windows because many were damaged in the March 2008 tornado that tore through the city’s heart. Dismantling the signs will allow crews to get to windows behind them, said Ed Walls, the hotel’s general manager. A letter will be taken down each day until the job is done, he said.
