Kroger is closing a Brookwood location, the company announced.

The store, at 1745 Peachtree St. Northeast, is across the street from Atlanta's Amtrak station. It will close July 8.

The store had experienced "declining sales and negative profit over an extended period of time," the company said in a statement, and its closure was necessary to make Kroger more competitive in the market.

A company spokesman said Kroger has a tentative agreement to fill the space with an art supply store, Sam Flax. Sam Flax has a location less than two miles away, on Northside Drive. An employee there said that store will not stay open, but he did not know when the move would take place.

Employees at the closing Kroger store will be considered for jobs in other area locations.

The spokesman, Glynn Jenkins, said he is not aware of plans to close any other metro Atlanta locations.
