Carpet tile maker Interface plans to move its offices from Vinings to Midtown Atlanta.
Interface, known for its environmentally-friendly manufacturing, said Wednesday it will consolidate its headquarters and two other corporate offices at a low-rise building it plans to make over at 1280 West Peachtree Street near the Arts Center MARTA station.
Interface makes carpet tile typically found in commercial settings. Brands include Interface and FLOR.
Jay Gould, president and chief operating officer, said the site fit two important needs: a location at the center of the city’s design community and a direct link to transit.
“We think that’s a smart choice for the office of the future and for our employees, not only for today, but for tomorrow,” Gould said of MARTA. He said he plans to take transit to work.
Interface, founded by the late Ray Anderson, has been based in Vinings for 25 years. Gould said the Midtown office will be an easier commute for many employees, either by road or transit.
About 150 to 200 employees will be based at the new offices, which will also include showroom space. Gould said no public incentives were involved in the relocation. The move to Midtown will also involve a regional headquarters and design center based in the Brickworks west of Georgia Tech.
Interface scouted office sites along the Beltline and in Buckhead, Gould said.
The north side of West Peachtree was appealing, he said, for its status as an up-and-coming stretch. The area around Arts Center station is poised to see a number of new projects and MARTA has started talks with a development team about a high-density, mixed-use project atop the station.
Perkins+Will will be designer of the new space, Parkside Partners is the owner and developer of the project and JLL was Interface’s real estate consultant on the job.
