Even as its hometown digs out of the ice, Home Depot is preparing for spring.

The home improvement chain said it will hire more than 80,000 temporary workers nationwide in anticipation of the big spring selling season, the busiest time of the year for the company.

More than 1,200 of those hires will be in metro Atlanta, said spokesman Stephen Holmes, with the possibility of some staying on beyond the spring hiring surge.

“We’ll try to keep as many on board permanently as we can for regular positions,” he said.

Home Depot hired about the same number the past two years.

A brightening economy and improvements in the home building industry have helped Home Depot rebound from the recession. The company also has seen strong revenue from the rebuilding of the northeast after Hurricane Sandy, and same-store sales were up 7.4 percent in earnings released in November.

The job news comes just days after the company opened a 1 million-square-foot “fulfillment center” in Locust Grove, one of three planned over the next 12 months. The facility south of Atlanta brings 125 jobs, which Home Depot says it will eventually increase to 300.

The spring seasonal jobs are available at www.careers.homedepot.com. All applicants must apply online, Home Depot said.
