Profit at Atlanta-based Genuine Parts Company was up 28 percent in the second quarter compared to a year ago, the auto parts retailer reported Thursday.

Net income for the owner of Napa auto parts and Motion Industries was $216.4 million or $1.39 a share in the quarter, compared to $168.6 million or $1.08 a share during the same period a year ago. Sales reached a record $3.68 billion, up 10 percent compared to the second quarter of 2012.

“We are pleased to report record levels of sales and earnings for the second quarter,” said Thomas C. Gallagher, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer. “The progress in our operations was driven by the improved results in our automotive business.”

There were areas on concern during the quarter in the company’s non-automotive sector. Motion Industries saw a 1 percent sales decline while sales dropped off 4 percent for EIS, Genuine’s electrical and electronics group. Sales at the office products arm S.P. Richards fell 3 percent.
