A gay couple’s marriage proposal at a Home Depot in Salt Lake earlier this month has attracted more than 9 million views on YouTube since it was posted.

Dustin Reeser arrived at the home improvement retailer with roommate Spencer Stout, who thought he was there to help his Reeser pick out lighting for a party, according to the YouTube posting and published reports.

After the pair made it to the lumber aisle, a flash mob of about 30 people was waiting to perform Betty Who’s “Somebody Loves You.”

The mob was made up of friends and family and the marriage proposal followed with Reeser on bended knee amid the two-by-fours.

Stout told a local television station in Salt Lake City the Home Depot was chosen for a reason.

“The very first time we met, we walked through a Home Depot, and he showed me what he had built and showed me what we had done, so I thought it would be a great place for the proposal because it was kind of our first date,” Stout the Fox News affiliate.

Although Stout accepted the proposal, it may be some time before they can tie the knot in Utah. The state is among those that ban same-sex marriages, and the state’s attorney general’s office recently filed a brief in U.S. District Court defending the ban after three couples sued to have it declared unconstitutional.

Last week, the American Family Association, which opposes same-sex marriages, said it was suspending a boycott of Home Depot because the retailer has pulled funding for gay and lesbian groups, but the Atlanta-based company said its policies have not changed.
